Our Story

Philadelphia Circa 1892

Originally coined Eastern Smelting, our refinery was initially located on South 18th street, before moving to 1215 Cherry Street, in the heart of Center City Philadelphia. Garfield Refining would work out of this facility for over 40 years before moving. In 1976, the City of Philadelphia proposed a plan to start construction on what would later be known as the PA Convention Center, directly over the ground where the refinery stood.

Eastern Smelting

Innovations & Changes

In 1985, President and owner Matt Garfield moved the refinery to Northeast Philadelphia, where it stands today. Along with the new building, Garfield also upgraded its facility, hired new staff, and revamped our methods of scientific analysis. This allowed us to take on larger clients and provide more accurate results to our growing customer base.

Today, Garfield caters to a variety of different industries and has served more than 1 million clients worldwide. We use the experience and knowledge that we’ve gained over the last 127 years to provide the best service in the industry.

We’re always humbled by our customers’ support and appreciation for the contributions we make to their recycling efforts. Dentaltown Magazine’s Townie Choice Awards annually celebrates the top businesses servicing the dental industry.
